The brief for this art gallery was to explore the use of Hemp in Central America. This sustainable material is not often used in the region but offers huge potential to the construction industry as it grows incredibly fast. It also provides unparalleled thermal properties and comfort, thereby reducing energy consumption. It is the perfect material for the dry or humid conditions of tropical locations.
Our design frames two dramatic ocean views, ensuring the natural world is exhibited in the same way as the artwork in the gallery spaces. By breaking the building in half we were able to create a roof terrace set into the natural landscape. Combining form and material, this project presents a test-bed for a new kind of building for Costa Rica.
